Gingerbread (Cookies/House)

This is a recipe I got for a gingerbread house. To make a house out of it, make the batch 3 times. Three batches should make the house and have some left over for gingerbread men. And assemble the house with Royal icing (you will need at least a double batch of icing to assemble house).

Ingredients

  • 3 ½ c flour
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground all spice
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • tsp salt
  • ½ c shortening
  • ½ c sugar
  • ¾ c molasses
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, ginger, cinnamon, baking soda, allspice, nutmeg and salt in large bowl. Set aside.

  2. Beat shorting and sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg; beat well.

  3. Beat in as much of the flour mixture as possible with mixer. Mix in the rest by hand. Dough will be stiff. Wrap in plastic. Refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.

  4. Pre heat oven to 350 deg F.

  5. Roll dough and use cookie cutters to make gingerbread men. Put on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. If making house, let cut out dough stand at room temp for 2 to 4 hours before baking.

  6. Bake for 20 to 25 min or until ginerbread pieces are hard to the touch. Watch it ! It burns really easy !

  7. Cool sheets on wire rakes until pieces are cool enough to handle.
