Amish Grapenuts

a zillion times better than regular Grapenuts. Note that this is a HUGE recipe. I made a half batch and the cake from 1 pan filled 4 baking sheets with cereal.

  • ½ c lard
  • ½ c butter
  • 5 c buttermilk (or sour milk)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 c brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 6 c wheat flour
  • 2 c oatmeal, uncooked

  1. Melt butter and lard together. Sift in baking soda to prevent lumps. Mix all dry ingredients together well. Then add liquid ingredients. The dough should be fairly thick. Put in 2 9x13 pans, spreading evenly with spoon or spatula. Bake at 350° until cake is done. Cool slightly, then crumble cake onto baking sheets and continue baking at 350°. Stir every 15 minutes until done (aka perfectly crunchy).
