Vegan Sloppy Joes


  • 1 c dry TVP (or 1/2 C cooked, mashed garbanzo beans)
  • 1 c boiling water
  • 1 15-oz can tomato sauce
  • 1-2 tsp garlic
  • 1-2 tsp paprika
  • 1-2 tsp vegan worcestershire sauce
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 12 slices vegan cheese
  • 6 hamburger-style buns


  1. If using TVP, rehydrate with the boiling water in a medium bowl and let sit 5 minutes. Otherwise, place mashed garbanzo beans in a medium bowl. Add all other ingredients except vegan cheese slices and buns. Mix well and adjust seasonings to taste.

  2. Split the buns in half and put one slice of cheese on each half. Top with sloppy joe mixture. These can either be heated in the microwave or baked in the oven at 400°F for 10 minutes.
