Almond Crescent (Nussbaumkinder)

My grandma always made these for Christmas. She never put almonds in them, maybe because of the cost difference? So neither do we. Still they are one of my favorites!


  • 1 c lard or shortening
  • 1 c butter
  • 2/3 c sugar
  • 2 tsp almond extract
  • 4 c sifted flour
  • 1 1/3 c ground walnuts
  • 1 c chocolate chips (heaping)
  • or
  • Powdered sugar


  1. Cream first 4 ingredients.

  2. Add flour, then nuts.

  3. Refrigerate.

  4. Form into small crescents (about 1 heaping tsp of dough yields around 7 dozen)

  5. Bake 325° Until light brown. About 15 minutes.

  6. Let cool completely before spooning melted chocolate to one end. Don’t dip because they will stick to the tray.

  7. Chill to set.

  8. Alternatively, they can be rolled in powdered sugar.
