- 2 c white sugar
- 1 c shortening (w replace 1/2 cup with butter) note-I don't use shortening so I substitute all butter or half butter and half lard... probably not exactly the same result
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 ¼ c buttermilk
- 4 c flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 4 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp almond extract
Do not double recipe!! Make one batch at a time.
Cream sugar and shortening well.
Add egg yolks and flavoring
Sift dry ingredients into a bowl.
Add batter to it, mixing well.
It should be quite soft, but add more flour if it does not hold its shape at all, keeping in mind that it will also firm up after refrigeration.
Cover tightly and let stand overnight in fridge
Roll out thick (or thin if that is your preference) on heavily floured board.
Sprinkle flour on top as needed to roll (lots)
Sprinkle with powdered sugar (optional)
Bake 6 minutes at 400
